Obama’s Daughters Negotiate For Puppy
26 02 2008Frontrunner in the Democratic Presidential nomination race, Barack Obama, has promised daughters, Malia, 9, and Sasha, 6, that they will get a puppy once the election is over, regardless of the outcome.
"The deal breaker is getting [my daughters] a dog," Obama reveals. "Their whole thing is after the campaign, win or lose, they will get a dog. Sometimes I worry they're rooting for me to lose so they can get their dog quicker."
Obama's historic presidential run has delivered some perks for Malia and Sasha, as well as wife, Michelle, whom he refers to as his "rock." Obama says it's gotten a lot easier to get dinner reservations to treat Michelle and he can even get Hannah Montana tickets for his daughters without having to camp out overnight.
"I was able to get them tickets already, which raised me tremendously in their eyes," he says.
The worst part of running? Losing his anonymity, Obama reveals. He says he can no longer do things like take the girls out for a casual visit to the zoo, since disguising himself has proven not to be very effective.
"A baseball cap and dressing down in jeans and an overcoat works if I move fast enough. The problem is my ears are pretty prominent," Obama said.
Heard on news the Obama’s are looking for a puppy for the girls. Why not teach them a lesson of caring for a puppy from the Humane Society or a dog that needs a home. Why do they think that a pedigree is the best choice.
If they get a pedigree dog, then the “world” will go crazy trying to breed that breed. Maybe if they got an unwanted dog, others might see the need and adopt.. We don’t need more dogs in this world.
If they want a poodle, then find one in a shelter, bet the dog would love to have a nice home, and it doesn’t have to be the White House, just a loving family with a dog house.
How about a shelter dog/puppy? Better yet, a “foreclosure dog/puppy” turned in by an owner forced out of his/her home?

I agree, stop with the negative….Where in the USA is it not a burden for a teenager to have a child. If you beleive that its easy as pie to have a child at a young age please take off your rose colored glasses. Obama never meant it that way and stop slamming him and his message to fit your own agenda

As for getting a puppy from a rescue I agree, He seems to be very against puppy mills, but all they will be creating is more puppy mills if they choose a pedigree, and a poodle mix will just further destroy the Golden Retriever and Poodle pedigrees.

I have to suggest that they get a Pug puppy. They will find out how much fun having a dog is because the Pug is so happy, loves people and other dogs and you can take them anywhere and they are still happy! I think that even the girls parents will like the Pug after experiencing their temperament. Happy, healthy dogs!
ps: After 50 years of MANY different breeds, showing, breeding, training and most important, pure working breeds (on our ranch), I still recommend the Pug, they were bred to be a family dog, a lap dog and they are not yappy. Try a Pug!
rescue a dog for each daughter from death row it will help another cause and demonstrate to the rest of us that even the least is important

Come on, be fair. I’m pretty sure that was a negative comment that you responded with, Nelle. At least just say that “Negative people say negative comments,” because that’s all it really is.
Besides, this election is a milestone for American’s accepting one another regardless of our differences (may they be political, race, religious, sexual preference, or whatever). Making negative comments to jab at each others differences only forces us to take a step in the backwards direction. When we do that, how will we ever move forward?
I am an avid animal supporter especially of the adopted animals…we have two
purebreed Shih Tzus that came from Animal Shelter. The person above is correct you can get almost any breed of dog from a shelter. I voted for Mr Obama and am thrilled he won…but hope he and Michelle will give serious thought to adoption…maybe it would set a trend in the nation to give lost and scaird dogs a loving home. I wish there were some way to get this message to Barack.
I agree that they should adopt a puppy from a shelter, but should they choose to stray from that notion, then I believe a Wire Fox Terrier would be a great fit for the First Family, as well at the White House lawn. They have great temperaments; they are very loyal and playful, yet very distinguished, and they don’t shed or require heavy maintenance like some smaller breeds.
Some people are so rude. Doesnt everyone realize, white or black, hispanic, asian or arab, we are all God’s children?

I think it would be a great thing for the Obamas to adopt a puppy from a shelter. And knowing Mom & Dad’s penchant for helping the less fortunate I’m sure that’s exactly what they will do.

What does it matter if Pres Elect gets a poodle from a breeder? It is best he gets a dog from a reputable breeder! Who wants a dog from shelter that might have PTSD or some genetic disease. Those beautiful girls who have waited on their puppy deserve a healthy , well adjusted puppy. Please get off the Humane Society kick. Its great to get a dog from the pound, but it is not the only way. Not all breeders are MILLS!
I think they should get a shetland sheep dog (sheltie). The Shetland Sheepdog is an outstanding companion dog and is intensely loyal, with a pleasant temperament. It is lively, intelligent, trainable, and willing to please and obey. Shelties are relatively sensitive, and do not need a hard hand when training.
Shelties are loving, loyal, and affectionate with their family. They stand at about 15in high and look alot like a collie but are much smaller.
IF OBAMA IS LOOKING FOR A PUPPY I HAVE A PURE BREED GOLDEN I WOULD LOVE TO GIVE TO HIS DAUGHTERS. IT IS ONLY 2 WKS OLD RIGHT NOW. THESE DOGS HAVE GOOD HEARTS AND ARE GREAT WITH CHILDREN.
I would like to suggest a Labradoodle for the White House. The Labradoodle was originally crossbreed in Australia as a non-shedding allergy free service dog. This turned into having the intelligence of a Poodle with the loving - loyal retriever attitude. Maybe having a non-shedding allergy free dog in the White House would be wise for those visiting the White House that have dog/pet allergies. While some people might disagree with me Rutland Manor is the kennel that the original veterian cross breed these dogs to develop a non-shedding allergy free service dog. The last two Westiminster Kennel Club shows have really talked about this crossbreed and what a great dog it has developed. Use the International Australian Labradoodle Association, Inc. This site list reputable breeders. This is not a designer dog - this dog was crossbreed for a purpose. I can’t being to tell you how loving and cuddly this breed is. While my Labradoodle weighs in at 80 lbs., they are now crossbreeding a miniture size. These are very social animals and love everyone. You can put 100 Labradoodles together and never have a dog fight. I’ve shown dogs and I love ‘Bradley’, my Labradoodle over any breed.

I have been following the puppy issue for a long time, and I still hold out hope for a dachshund in the White House.
Hello there I was very excited to hear that Obama’s daughters wanted a dog and I just had this great idea in my mind, to give them our dog because we really don’t want to put her in a dog pound were she’ll just die….to make the story short, me and my parents want to give away our dog Princess(Minature Toy Poodle) for the reason that we are planning to move to an apartment and we are looking for someone who will really take care of her because she is adorable and is use to having everything she wants(ie. she has more pillows than I do haha) and she is also very, very playful. I also heard that the oldest daughter is allergic to dogs like me so they cannot just have any dog….well I’ve had princess for like 6 years or so living with us(inside the house) meaning that she is not that old, she still has a quite long life to live and I’ve never had an allergic reaction because of her. Also after doing some research and asking an actual experienced doctor, I found out that Poodles are one of the cleanest dogs on Earth, so It’s one of the types of dogs an allergic person could have as a pet. Well that’s my story hopefully in my deepest wishes this will get to the ears of Obama and my little Princess will have a new home….:D

I think that a shitzu would be perfect; i have a little shitzu and she doesant shed at all, so she would be perfect in the whitehouse. Plus she is very sweet and loving to me and my younger brother.

I just read an article that the Obama’s plan to adopt a shelter dog, but they need to find one that is hypoallergenic because Malia is allergic.
I think you should really get a Golden Doodle. That is a mix of a Standard Poodle and a Golden Retriever. I’m 9 and a half years old and I have one. He doesn’t shed, he’s very sweet and happy, and loyal. He’s hypoallergenic so a dog like mine would be awesome in the White House with the Obama family. YES YOU CAN!! YES YOU CAN!! Get a doodle!
Very few of you are remembering that Malia has allergies. I am a strong supporter of adopting instead of buying, and I do think that they should still do this; but they will be looking for a hypoallergenic breed, and it’s going to take some time of shelter searching to find one. A Golden Retriever or a sheepdog or something just won’t work; and though they could get a mutt, it would be less likely to have the qualities necessary of a hypoallergenic dog. I’m sure they’ll make the right choice and make a rescue, but we really shouldn’t hold it against them if they are unable to. The pressure of two little girls who were promised a puppy may outweigh the time it would take to find the right dog in a shelter, and despite being an avid animal lover, I think the President has more important things to spend his time on than going from shelter to shelter looking for a dog that won’t make his daughter sick.
P.S.–saying that all breeders are puppy mills is extremely closed-minded and rather ignorant. I don’t agree with breeding, either, but there’s a huge difference between a small breeder who takes very good care of their animals, keeping them in large runs (or better yet, in the house) to breed a litter or two a year; and a puppy mill with hundreds of dogs in cages too small for them to properly stand or lay down, locked up for their entire lives and made to pop out a litter every couple of months until they die from the lack of nutrition from the heavy strain their abusive owners put on them.
This is all a little silly if you ask me. This is a personaly decision and they should be able to buy/adopt whatever they want. The girls want a puppy not a dog and their daddy should be able to give them a puppy! As far as shelters go, I am all for rescuing dogs if it is what you want to do, but there are downsides to it. You have no idea where they are coming from and how they have been treated up to the point you meet them. Too much risk for my children! I want to know where my dog is coming from and see where it has been raised. Also, Malia has allergy problems so that needs to be considered as well. Why oh why do people keep suggesting dachshunds and Pugs and other breeds that should not even be considered? The child has allergies and they need to make an intelligent decision!!!
