Angelina’s Pregnancy Woes
28 03 2008Pregnancy isn't always a glowing and glamorous time for celebrities, even the A-list ones.
Angelina Jolie is struggling with her pregnancy this time around, as she enters her third trimester carrying fraternal twins. The 32-year-old actress is reportedly suffering from complications that include edema or swelling, gestational diabetes, fatigue and relentless nausea.
"Angie has gestational diabetes," an insider tells Star. "She found out about a month ago and has been trying to keep it under wraps. She's been seeing a nutritionist about it — frequently."
Pregnant women who have never had diabetes before but who have high blood glucose levels during pregnancy are said to have gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes affects about 4% of all pregnant women - about 135,000 cases of gestational diabetes in the United States each year.
The condition causes extra blood glucose to cross the placenta, forcing the baby's pancreas to make extra insulin to get rid of the blood glucose. Since the baby is getting more energy than it needs to grow and develop, the extra energy is stored as fat. This can lead to macrosomia, or a "fat" baby.
Angelina has been forced to drastically alter her diet. "She doesn't pay much attention to food," her brother, James Haven. "But it's different when she's pregnant."
Like many pregnant women, the A Mighty Heart actress is also dealing with painful swollen feet, or edema. "Her shoes have gone up a half size at least," a source says. "She's constantly tired. She's sick and irritable and feels heavy and weak."
Feel better, Ange!
